Sports Injuries in Physiotherapy
Sports injuries are common among athletes and occur during physical activities. These injuries typically result from overuse or acute trauma to a part of the body, such as during running, long jumping, continuous play in sports like cricket and tennis, or when a body part comes into contact with hard objects like a ball, bat, or the ground. Injuries can include broken bones, torn ligaments, tendons, or repeated stress injuries caused by overuse.
At Re-Live Orthopaedic Physiotherapy & Wellness Clinic, we focus on relieving pain, promoting healing, and training athletes to return to their sport with full strength, endurance, and power. Our management protocol may include various treatment modalities such as ultrasound and cryotherapy, along with rest for the injured area while keeping other body parts active. Exercise is introduced to improve strength and maintain endurance.
Treatment Protocol for Moderate or Mild Injuries
Strength & Flexibility
To improve strength and flexibility, we follow a structured protocol:
- Isometric Resistance Exercises: Performed within the available range of motion.
- Isotonic Exercises: Gradual progression with free weights to avoid edema or soreness.
- Weight-Bearing & Non-Weight-Bearing Exercises: Weight training is introduced daily in the early stages, progressing to alternate days as strength improves.
- Slow Static Stretching and PNF: Techniques aimed at regaining normal flexibility and joint mobility.

Endurance
Endurance training is integrated into the rehabilitation process, focusing on:
- Low-Load Endurance Exercises: 30 minutes per day, including warm-up, jogging, cool-down, and low-impact aerobic training.
Power
Athletes must regain their power before returning to competition. We use Plyometric Techniques to enhance power, such as double and single hop exercises, depth jumping, and medicine ball circuit training. Exercises include:
- Inclined Push-ups
- Medicine Ball Chest Passes
- Sit-ups and Abdominal Crunches
- Back Extension Chest Raises
- Squat Jumps
- Step-ups and Bench Squats
Final Rehabilitation & Prevention
In the final phase of rehabilitation, emphasis is placed on agility and coordination. We educate athletes on how to prevent misuse and avoid repeated stress on the injured part. Regular follow-ups are advised to ensure complete healing before returning to full competition.
